Taiwan Weather 101: What Students Should Pack and Prepare

Studying in a new country and place can be exciting. It makes us eager to explore new surroundings and experiences. However, an important aspect to learn before moving to a new location is understanding the weather and seasons of the destination country.

Taiwan has a subtropical climate with relatively high humidity throughout the year. There are four seasons in Taiwan: spring, summer, fall, and winter. The weather in northern Taiwan (like Taipei and Taoyuan) tends to be cooler compared to southern areas (like Taichung and Kaohsiung).

Each season in Taiwan has its own unique characteristics. Here are some tips to follow for each season while living in Taiwan:

  1. Spring (March – May)
Spring is one of the best seasons for traveling due to its cool weather. You can wear light and not too thick clothing. A jacket can be carried just in case the temperature suddenly drops. It is also advisable to carry an umbrella, as light rain showers can occur at any time during this season.
  2. Summer (June – August)
Summer in Taiwan can reach up to 38°C with humid conditions. The heat during the day can make you feel sticky and sweaty. It’s recommended to wear breathable and moisture-wicking clothes to stay comfortable while going about your daily activities. Bring an umbrella to shield yourself from the intense sunlight. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen and wear a hat to protect your skin from sunburn during the day.
  3. Fall (September – November)
This is also a favorite season for tourists visiting Taiwan because it is the transition from summer to winter. Temperatures start to drop, and cold winds often blow during this season, so it’s advisable to wear layered clothing to stay warm and protect yourself from the chilly breeze.
  4. Winter (December – February)
Winter temperatures can drop to around 13°C. However, some areas in Taiwan, such as the Alishan (阿里山) and Yang Ming Shan (陽明山) mountains, can reach below 10°C. The wind often blows strong in winter, so wearing thick clothing and jackets is highly recommended. You can also equip yourself with additional accessories like scarves and gloves to stay warm.

Living in Taiwan with its frequently changing and unique weather requires you to stay vigilant. It’s recommended to always check the weather forecast before leaving a place, so you can better prepare your items and wear appropriate clothing. Carrying an umbrella and a water bottle in your bag is the best equipment that will help you a lot.
