Continuing your studies in Taiwan is a bold step that will open up many international career opportunities. By preparing yourself thoroughly—such as understanding cultural differences and taking the necessary steps before departure—you’ll be ready to study in Taiwan. Now, for those of you who have completed applications to universities in Taiwan and even received your LOA, this is the perfect time to step on the gas and prepare everything else. Being accepted into a university is not the finish line that allows you to relax—pay close attention to all the steps below:
- Academic and Non-Academic Requirements
Complete all academic documents such as your diploma and transcripts from semesters 1–6 of high school. It is important to ensure that both your diploma and transcripts are in English. If the original documents from your school are in Indonesian, you must use a certified translator. The translation process cannot be done by yourself—it must be done by an official certified translator. This process usually takes at least 3 days. If your school cannot provide transcripts, don’t worry—you can use your school report cards instead.
For non-academic documents, make sure to check your passport. If you don’t have one yet, apply for it immediately. If you already have one, check the expiry date! Your passport must be valid for at least 6–8 months before your departure date. - Language Skills
Even if your program is a 1+4 program or an English-taught program, having basic Mandarin skills will be very helpful. Why? It will make your daily life in Taiwan much easier—such as shopping, ordering food, or communicating with locals. So, start learning Mandarin now, at least some basic phrases. - Document Legalization
This process is specifically for legalizing academic documents like your diploma and transcripts, and it usually takes about one month. If the original documents are in Indonesian, you will need to pay double because the certified translations must also be legalized. Each original academic document must be accompanied by one photocopy—take note of this. During the legalization process, you must provide photocopies of your university acceptance or registration proof, ID card, and passport. This is a crucial moment, especially if you are still waiting for your diploma and transcripts—so act quickly! - Medical Check-Up
This must be done within three months before applying for your visa, so you cannot do it too early. This document is required for visa processing. Most importantly, you cannot go to just any clinic or hospital—you must go to a clinic or hospital approved by the Taiwan government. - Travel Documents
Check your university’s orientation and intake dates to align them with your departure schedule. Leave 4–7 days upon arrival in Taiwan to arrange your dorm, ARC, and other necessities. Flight costs depend on your departure and destination cities. Many airlines offer extra baggage allowances for students studying abroad. For example, Singapore Airlines provides up to 40 kg of baggage for verified student passengers. However, make sure to carefully review the maximum luggage capacity according to airline and country regulations. - Visa Application
This process takes about 2 working weeks and requires several documents, such as a passport valid for at least 6 months, high school diploma and transcripts, university acceptance letter, language certificate (not required for 1+4 programs), financial proof (such as a bank statement with a minimum balance of IDR 75 million over the past 6 months), medical report, and a completed visa application form. Additional supporting documents may also be required depending on each applicant’s condition. This visa process can take time and is very crucial, so don’t delay it.
