1+4 Bachelor’s Degree Program in Taiwan

Taiwan offers a variety of bachelor’s degree programs, including 2+2, 3+2, and 1+4 programs, each designed to meet the different needs of students. This article will discuss in detail one of the most beneficial programs, the 1+4 program at Da Yeh University, a private university in Taiwan.

The 1+4 bachelor’s degree program is an initiative by Taiwan’s Ministry of Education to attract students from Southeast and South Asian countries. Launched in 2022, the program has already been joined by many Indonesian students. In the first year, students take a Mandarin language course, which is subsidized directly by the Taiwanese government. After completing the language program, the availability of additional scholarships or subsidies for the chosen major depends on the policies of each university. Upon completion of the program, students will receive a Bachelor’s degree equivalent to an S1 degree.

This 1+4 program consists of one year of Mandarin language studies, followed by four years of undergraduate coursework in the chosen major. Unlike regular undergraduate programs in Taiwan, the 1+4 program focuses only on fundamental majors as designated by the Taiwanese government. Another advantage of this program is the opportunity for students to work part-time, intern, or gain work experience following Taiwan’s labor regulations. During the academic term, students can work part-time for 20 hours per week, while during school breaks, they can work up to 40 hours per week. Internships follow company work hours and the agreements made between students and employers.

Among the many universities offering this program, Da Yeh University stands out for its additional benefits. Some of the advantages include:

  • No requirement to submit a Mandarin or English language proficiency certificate for admission.
  • The university will assist students in connecting with local business owners for part-time job opportunities. The maximum working hours for part-time jobs are 20 hours per week during the semester and 40 hours per week during holidays.
  • Free accommodation/dormitory fees for two years at Da Yeh University.
  • Free tuition fees for one or two years (based on the principal’s recommendation). This is subject to the requirement that the student achieves a CEFR A2 level in Mandarin by the end of the first year.
  • The university offers excellent scholarships for outstanding academic and Mandarin language achievements:
    • Full tuition fee waiver for students ranked in the top 10% of their class for the semester.
    • 50% tuition fee waiver for students ranked in the top 30% of their class for the semester.
    • Additional scholarship of NTD$10,000 for students who achieve CEFR B2, C1, or C2 level in Mandarin proficiency.
